$HTTP_POST_FILES cannot be directly assigned to another variable.
ex: $newvar = $HTTP_POST_FILES['upload_file'] will not work.
To use the $HTTP_POST_FILES vars you need to save each parameter individually, or use
$HTTP_POST_VARS directly.
(tested on 4.0.6 on debian/apache)
