For older versions you can use:
$md5 = exec("md5sum $dir/$file");
$md5 = substr($md5,0,32);
$md5 will now contain the md5 checksum of the file.
Of course your system needs to have the md5sum program installed,
and executable by the owner of the webserver process (usually
nobody).
