By courtesy of Mr. Rui Hirokawa, I can tell you how to enable in PHP 4 the Japanese JIS True Type
Fonts, in the GD library (with freetype also, of course). The SJIS encoding is most used on a
Japanese Windows version or on an IME enabled version of other Windows. I will simply quote him:
"First of all, you need a Japanese TrueType font. Two different character encodings, Unicode
and Shift_JIS,
are used in Japanese Truetype fonts.
If you want to use Shift_JIS encoded fonts, you should add -DJISX0208
as compile option of gd"
