What has worked for me:
1. When accessing php files make sure the extension of the file matches AddType statements in .conf
files.
2. Access files always by prefixing them with http://localhost, e.g.
http://localhost/phpfile.php3 (or whatever you have
specified your extension to be) which means php files need to be in the documentroot directory
specified in httpd.conf. Do not try to run the files using file/open. A certain site said, to
paraphrase, "point your browser to
the example file", perhaps thinking that no one would be so stupid as to try to file/open it.
However, I was. Using this method all scripts to be executed must be, logically enough, below
documentroot in the directory structure. OK, this may not be the only way to work, but it's the
only way that has worked for me. IE4 works too, but you literally have to connect to your ISP to
access the localhost!!?? At least on the first access. Then, you're OK. (you can disconnect.
[Of course, behaviour may be different on your setup]) I know we want to get some real work done.
Two days to get to this point. Could have been worse. Need to find a workaround for that IE4 thing
tho'. There are some other useful suggestions on the page. Check 'em
out.
