About two comments above this one someone added a correction line:
$sql = "SELECT * FROM admins WHERE adminUsername='$PHP_AUTH_USER' &&
adminPassword='PASSWORD($PHP_AUTH_PW)'";
It contains a mixup with the quotation marks near the end of the line. This one ist correct:
$sql = "SELECT * FROM admins WHERE adminUsername='$PHP_AUTH_USER' &&
adminPassword=PASSWORD('$PHP_AUTH_PW')";
