Oh, I forgot to mention:
If your scripts are running under a different user as Apache (e.g. user wwwhtml, group ftp), you
have to set the php-tempdir owner to THIS user (wwwhtml, ftp here), not to the user Apache runs
under.
If you have many scripts and they run under different owners in safe_mode, you have to set up a
temp-dir for each of these users. This is relativly easy with php-directives in the
apache-directory-context - so you can set special php-flags for special directories. This works also
fine with set_execution_time and other options (e.g. if you have an admin-directory with scripts
with long execution times).
By the way, if you need to fopen files in the webspace (e.g. to save a user-contributed image) under
safe_mode, you need to set the same ownerships as above (make a directory with the same owner as the
script and save the files there).
