Something that I found a bit interesting was that you don't necessarily need to set
session.save_handler = user in order to define your session handlers. I have witnessed custom
session handlers working on systems where both the master and local values of session.save_handler =
files. It is stated above in a note at the top of the page that this must be set (furthermore, to do
it in the php.ini file).
However, if you do decide that you want to set the local value of session.save_handler to user, you
can use ini_set('session.save_handler','user') to do so - even though this
configuration option does not appear in the table on the ini_set manual page.
