Re: Red Hat removal and manual compile: RedHat does a couple of things in their RPM (for location). It's always best if you either remove everything from apache on up (and use ApacheToolbox or whatever), or if you use exactly RedHat's layout (via spec file extraction) and tweak your own. Of course, if you're using RedHat's spec file + latest PHP tarball, you'll have to remove a vast majority of the patches (or fix them). I think the relevant configure options for a manual compile into the RedHat layout needs to be ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --prefix=/usr --with-config-file-path=/etc --with-exec-dir=/usr/bin --with-layout=GNU Plus whatever other options you need. BTW, since you are compiling in ODBC, don't forget to remove the php-odbc package or you'll run into package conflicts.
