To get this to work properly, you have to compile PHP with "--with-zlib". If you don't, you won't get any errors, it just won't actually compress anything. This is a phenomenal thing. For just a small bit of processor time, you can DRASTICALLY reduce the bandwidth requirement of your scripts.
