There seems to be a problem with recent versions of PHP (4.0.6 and later) when compiled with GD
1.x.x, in that functions that require GD 2.0.1 are still present.
Unfortunately, PHP scripts can't test for this, because
function_exists("ImageCreateTrueColor") will return true. However, when you try to USE
the image function you get fatal errors.
I can't see any way around this using current versions of PHP - if someone has a solution
please post it.
