If you are having problems with 2.4.x not working with PHP then try rebuilding libmcrypt from
source after doing the following from the toplevel directory of the libmcrypt source:
perl -pi -e 's/ifdef USE_LTDL/ifndef USE_LTDL/g' $(find modules -name '*.c')
