in response to: woodt@nospamicx.sPamfreenet, the error that you are receiving is from the filesystem
not being able to access the file. this is why, for instance, if your home directory is chmod 700,
whereas your public_html directory is 755, the webserver will return 'forbidden'. The user
that is trying to access the file does not have execute permissions to the directory below it,
therefore not even knowing if the directory exists.
try it:
mkdir ~/foo
mkdir ~/foo/bar
chmod 700 ~/foo
chmod 711 ~
su - someone
ls -ld /home/whoever/foo/bar
ls: Permission Denied
exit
chmod 711 /home/whoever/foo
su - someone
ls -ld /home/whoever/foo/bar
drwx-r-x-r-x 3 whoever whoever /home/whoever/foo/bar
