Adding to the notes from joao.correia@valnetsado.pt and marcin@jackowski.net above.
Why qoute the salt at all. The following example worked fine for me.
$salt = crypt("something");
print(crypt($user_input, $salt)."\n");
print(crypt($user_input, $salt)."\n");
Both print statements produced the exact same results using php-4.1.2 and apache_1.3.24 on RedHat
7.1. It pretty much reiterates the php provided example 1 above.
