The answer to my own question is:
You must check your result with mysql_num_rows() before you try to use the result at all. I find
that a lot of code out there actually doesn't seem to do this...
If you choose not to first check each sql select query via mysql_num_rows(), you can expect to get
warnings such as this:
Warning: Unable to jump to row 0 on MySQL result ...
