In my case nothing of the above did the trick.
I made a, stupid I know, work around wich asumes that if it is not a file nor a link than it must be
a dir.
if ($file != "." && $file != ".." && !is_file($file) &&
!is_link($file))
b.t.w I'm using 4.04pl1 on Linux redhat 6.2
