Under (at least) php 4.0.6, is_dir returns false if the parent directory is unreadable, for example
/home/user is mode 750, owned by user.user
/home/user/stuff is mode 777, same owner
is_dir("/home/user") returns false
but so does is_dir("/home/user/stuff").
It seems to me that php attempts a tree traversal instead of directly accessing the directory in
question.
