You didn't read manual very well
it is sad in it it cannot operate (send header not authenticated) on cgi version of php
like someone said before all PHP_* variables should be referenced from environment
getenv("PHP_AUTH_USER")
or something like getenv("HTTP_POST_VARS[PHP_AUTH_USER]") <- I'm not shure in last
so don't take my word on that :)
but you could see a point.
but if you need something as constant protection of all files but you rather would use php auth
system then apache's
then you should consider using auto_prepend directive in php.ini file or something like that (just
an idea)

I am using NT4.0 sp 6.0 with apache 1.3.20, php 4.0.6
and doing the first example I get such message in my error.log:
[Wed Aug 01 14:25:26 2001] [error] [client x.x.x.x] malformed header from script. Bad
header=HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized: d:/program files/apache group/apache/php/php.exe
People!! help!!!
And i get authorization dialog only when i use "Status: 401 ... ", but in this case Apache
didn`t work as it must. It didnt show username with pass, only ask it again (3 times) and then shows
message as I press "Cancel" button.
