regarding libz.o problem when starting Apache reported by thelord8@comcast.net.
This does occur if you make PHP using its built-in mySql procedures. (when you run ./configure, it
will warn you about this).
If you want to use the built-in routines, run make as "make LDFLAGS=-lz" instead of
editing the Makefile as suggested by thelord8. The Makefile is overwritten each time you run
configure, so its not a good idea to edit it.
A better idea would be to install the mysql-devel. If using Redhat, its RPM places includes in
/usr/include/mysql and libraries in /usr/lib/mysql. For PHP configure, specify --with-mysql=/usr.
PHP configured, but wound't build, because it couldn't find libmysqlclient.a. Solution
was to "ln -s /usr/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.a". libz.o problem
doesn't occur (and you don't get any warnings) if you link in mysql as I've outlined.
