To enable GIF support in PHP 4.0.x you must have GD 1.3 library already installed. After running
configure with --with-gd option
you must add this line to php_config.h:
#define HAVE_GD_GIF 1
then do
make; make install
and compile.
I've just done it with my system and
everything is working properly. :)
