in case anyone cares, there are only three date formats that should be promoted .. you can never be
sure what a user will use but, if you are converting a date, you should be convert to one of the
following:
Y-m-d (ISO 8601, international standard)
d.m.Y (DIN 5008 / german, deprecated)
m/d/Y (american colloquial, deprecated)
these are the only valid date formats that should be used -- anything else, such as the british
"d/m/Y" or using the american format with dashes, as a user above was suggesting, is just
annoying and confusing .. your customers may use these annoying dates but, please, have some pity on
your fellow programmers and do not write code that relies on non-standard date formats !
