I think it is a handle to one (of many?) DB connections you may have open at any one time. This
provision was recently added, it seems -- check out mysql_query() vs mysql_db_query() to see that
the second one uses an explicit handle for the DB to query, and the prior one uses an implicit
(single) connection.
