Grr.. Global variables are NOT good. They don't have irreplaceable uses, and they typically
cause many more bugs than they help. They should be avoided much as one avoids big rabbits, with
pointy fangs that go like this...
Global variables are like programming objects in C++...
...and leaving everything in the class public.
