In versions previous to 4.2.1 (I think) after doing this:
ocifetch($stmt);
$val = ociresult($stmt,1);
If the sql statment you made returned no records, $val would be empty.
After the version noted above, $val contains some garbage characters (not sure where they came
from.)
I had to do this instead:
if(ocifetch($stmt))
$val = ociresult($stmt,1);
I haven't seen any documentation on what ocifetch returns, but this seemed to fix the problem.
