The comment above by ynniv@dev.null ( cc.gatech.edu ) on 6 June 2002 is incorrect. The word
'encryption' does *not* imply something can or should be undone. The encryption used in
traditional unix password and shadow files is one way encryption and there's a good reason why
it isn't commonly referred to as one way hashing. I have yet to find a security book that
doesn't consider one way encryption as encryption at all. The selection between one way
encryption and two way encryption (or reversible and irreversible encryption if you prefer) are
dependent upon the needs of those implementing the security model. It is my humble opinion that
both this post and the one above by ynniv@dev.null ( cc.gatech.edu ) from 6 June 2002 above should
both be removed as they are essentially noise and don't really contribute to the documentation
of the md5 function or it's practial uses at all.
