Don't think "mail" returns a true or false value.
Just tried this small pgm to test it:
<?
$ret_val=mail("test@example.com", "Subject", "Message");
echo $ret_val;
?>
It returned a 1 instead of true or false though the mail was sent successfully.
So please beware.

The email id used above is dummy ..used some other id to test it in my pgm.
