for me this worked:
setlocale('LC_ALL', 'en_US');
bindtextdomain('messages', './locale');
textdomain('messages');
using 2 character codes didn't work for me ever. doing a few other things worked, I think
putenv('LC_ALL=en_US');
setlocale();
What I have works with php 3.0.18 and 4.2.1 I haven't tried others, and gettext 0.11.1. (This
may be why code that worked for others did not work for me.)
