Maybe this is useless but here is a code sequence that does the same in PHP:

if ($sContent[$iStripHtml] == '<') {
$bInside = true;
$iDepth++;
}
if ($sContent[$iStripHtml - 1] == '>' && ! (--$iDepth)) {
$bInside = false;
}
if (!$bInside) {
$sStripped .= $sContent[$iStripHtml];
}
}
$sContent = $sStripped;
