Gentlemen I have solved the mystery with this function. In the beginning I also got the same error
when I was dynamically linking the library as an extension on a FreeBSD machine. Then I recompiled
php with "--with-pdflib" option and removed the dynamin link in php.ini and the fuction
started to work.
So this is a solution for unix/linux machines. I honestly don't know how to fix it in Windows.
:( But at least the cause of this behavior is more clear
