I finally found a *very* clumsy workaround for the problem above:
$dir = opendir("/home/username/public_html/some_directory");
while (($file = readdir($dir)) !== false) {
if (filetype("/home/username/public_html/some_directory/".$file) !=
"dir") {
echo "<option
value=\"".$file."\">".$file."</option>";
}
}
closedir($dir);
