A common mistake (I found out the hard way), is to use tab/space after the <?php tag:
/* this won't work */
<?php
session_start();
echo "session_start() works!";
?>
The reason is that you can't send anything before the function call
/* this works */
<?php
session_start();
echo "session_start() works!";
?>
