The memory limit error caused by large files is probably a bug in the implementation of this
function.
May be it has been corrected, so that the function will no more try to allocate a large buffer to
read the whole file in one call, and then write the content to standard output in a single call.
This function should simply, by default, use an 8KB buffer to read the file using its default buffer
size, or a larger buffer as set by the set_file_buffer($fp, $size) function, and perform a
read/write loop... Can the PHP developer team check this ?
