Whoops. The code I submitted before should have the following lines changed:
function rtime($time = time(), $max_level = 5)
should be:
function rtime($time = -1, $max_level = 5)
After checking for gmttime(), insert:
// Hack to deal with getting time since the "epoch"
if ($time == -1) $time = time();
