if you use:
// get rid of double spaces... useful for displaying blocks of indented code
$content = ereg_replace (" ", " ", $content);
// get rid of double spaces again to compensate for odd numbers of spaces
$content = ereg_replace (" ", " ", $content);
it will indent text without breaking <br /> and without keeping text from wrapping.
