Recursive arrays and multi-dimensional arrays are the same thing and completely identical.
The following confirms this:
$fruits1["european"]["green"] = "Apple";
$fruits2 = array ( "european" => array ( "green" => "Apple"));
print ($fruits1 === $fruits2);
Result: 1 (= true)
