If the manual starts with an introduction of "features" that php is intended to support for making web pages more dynamic that would be super. Right now a perl, C++, Java, programmer can not quickly see the "values" added by php. In particular should indicate; (1) php is not SSI --- it is more, why? (2) php is not CGI --- but easier and better? why (3) what typical applications calls for php and hard to substitute with other techniques. Paul S. Wang http://www.php.net/manual/langref.php
