Rather than using str_replace try base64_encode/base64_decode, or urlencode depending on your
needs.
I've had a lot of trouble with serializing objects. The problem is that special characters such
as < > ' ~ ` etc. will cause problems. You will need to use some form of encode and
decode function to fix this. in other words you need to str_replace all these with for example
{tildae}...
