If you set up Red Hat 8 with the default server installation method, it will already have Apache
version 2.0.40-8 and PHP version 4.2.2, and if you want to install from source as described here,
you will want to remove those two RPM's along with the appropriate dependencies as follows:
First, stop Apache, with the command:
/etc/init.d/httpd stop
Second, remove all dependent RPMs:
rpm -ve mod_perl
rpm -ve mod_python
rpm -ve mod_ssl
rpm -ve php-imap
rpm -ve php-ldap
Finally remove PHP and apache:
rpm -ve php
rpm -ve httpd
Then you can continue with the above instructions, which worked the first time through for me, once
the RPM's above were removed.
