got problems using the downloaded gd package and running libpng and jpg on an openbsd machine.
after some tries i used the bundled gd and the jpg and png support worked out fine.
try configuring like this:
./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --enable-track-vars --with-gd
--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local --with-png-dir=/usr/local --with-zlib-dir=shared
