In addition to the SMTP code listed by GreyWyvern, it will be useful to add the following lines if
your SMTP requires authentication:
fputs ($connect, "AUTH LOGIN"."\r\n");
fputs ($connect, base64_encode($user_id)."\r\n");
fputs ($connect, base64_encode("$user_password")."\r\n");
