note 29042 added to function.date

We have a logging in a MySQL-db. It stores the data as yyyy-mm-dd. Now I want to be able to get the day of the week from this format. In other words, I want to be able to enter the date in yyyy-mm-dd format en returns the weekday (like Saturday). Does anybody knows how I can do that?
