For use of $_SESSION, documentation says at top of EXAMPLES "... you 'do not need' to
use the global keyword for $_SESSION. ...".
But in fact you 'may not use global keyword' when accessing $_SESSION from within a
function (PHP 4.3.0); otherwise a new global variable seems to be created/accessed!
