I had a strange Problem on a Debian System with PHP 4.2.1-3.
$filename is $filename_name not the tempname on the Server.

if ($filename==$filename_name):
$filename=$_FILES['filename']['tmp_name'];
endif;
--- CUT END ---
This bit of code helps to get the right tempfile as u expect.
