To save others the hours I spent, I'd like to point out the following: Even if you are using the built-in GD libraries for 4.3.0 and above, you still need to download and install jpeg-6b, libpng and zlib before you can manipulate anything except read-only gifs. These libraries are NOT bundled. And they need to be installed as shared, not static libraries.
