Here is a pitfall that I ran into after installing PHP 4.2.3 on Win32. Something to watch out for.
Both php.ini-dist and php.ini-recommended have the following section in them :
; Argument passed to save_handler. In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
session.save_path = /tmp
This directory is not a valid Win32 temp directory. After installing, change this to something like
C:\WINNT\TEMP. If this is not done, scripts won't be able to save session data.
The apache error log will show something like :
PHP Warning: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of
session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0
