note 30696 added to ref.image

Vinylninja : I am working to get gd, freetype etc running on OS X at present, and having exactly the same problem! With XFree86 now installed I can get Freetype 1 to work, although I am getting Warning messages when I call imagettftext (messages with no error description, just the word Warning!). Freetype2 constantly gave me the _LT_New_Face message. I'd be keen to discuss the problems your encountering - maybe we can find a solution with both of us attacking it! I've been working with advanced PHP for years, and compiled perfectly on various Linux distributions, but getting no joy with Freetype on Mac!
