Regarding Note of 19-Sep-2002:
This is incorrect. The following code works as expected:
--------------------------------
Function foobar()
{
global $a;
$a=5;
}
Foobar();
echo $a;
--------------------------------
And will output "5", as of PHP 4.2.x
