One thing to observer about creating thumbnails is that images that are reduced to more than half
their original dimensions usually end up murky, due to the loss of edge detail (as the JPEG format
illustrates, edges are important to the human eye and cortex when interpreting an image).
The solution is often to reduce the image in stages: reduce the image dimensions to half the
original, sharpen (to recover the edge detail), halve again, sharpen again ... and so on until the
final reduction to the final size.
All that's needed now is a sharpening operator :)
