Here's another "gotcha":
$newfilename = tempnam("/tmp", "abc");
This simple call kept not working until I finally turned error display on. As it turned out, the
open_basedir restriction was on and "/tmp/" was in the acceptable list, not
"/tmp".
If this function keeps failing, take a look at what your open_basedir allows.
