I just did a var_dump(get_defined_vars()) after an include, and it most definitely DID show the
variables that were set inside the include.
It did not show variables that were set inside FUNCTIONS inside the included or the page itself,
this is a function of scope. But variables set inside the include page but not within functions are
available to the calling page.
