This note has been deleted. Please post questions etc to the mailing
list (php-general@lists.php.net); feature requests to the bug database
(http://bugs.php.net). The manual notes system is for submissions of
text to be included in the manual; please make sure to read the
instructions at http://www.php.net/manual/add-note.php before
adding
another note.
As to your question, I doubt that bitwise operators are used only by
the most advanced PHP programmers. For instance, they provide the
easiest way to control PHP's error reporting level (See the manual
section http://www.php.net/manual/features.error-handling.php)
I don't think that bit wrangling could really be described as an
'obscure feature'; many languages have analogous functionality, and
the concept involved is one of the basics of computer logic--AFAIK,
it's usually covered in any Introduction to Programming-type course.
